Where to Stay in Copenhagen: Best Areas and Cheap Hotels in the City Centre

Copenhagen is one of the most beautiful European cities we’ve seen, and it deserves all the praise! But it’s “a little bit(!)” expensive. That’s why we wanted to share where to stay in Copenhagen without breaking the bank.

We went to Copenhagen at Christmas 2019, and we’d love to go back in summer. We still haven’t had enough of it! 🙂

So we sat down and put together this guide on where to stay in Copenhagen. It covers the best areas to stay in and affordable hotels near the city centre.

Don’t miss our Copenhagen travel guide too!

We recommend four areas to stay in Copenhagen. Here they are, with our picks in each:

Where to Stay in Copenhagen: The Best Areas

1. Vesterbro

Vesterbro is one of our favourite areas in Copenhagen. It’s close to the centre but less crowded 🙂 You can also find affordable places to stay here.

Three hotels in Vesterbro were highly recommended to us:

All three are very reasonably priced for Copenhagen. Sadly, they were fully booked when we went. We especially love Meininger hotels, having stayed in many of them across Europe!

2. Østerbro

Østerbro, in the north of Copenhagen, is quieter and calmer than other parts of the city. Once you’re there, you’ll notice far more locals than tourists.

Another plus: hotels here are relatively affordable, which makes it a smart place to stay in Copenhagen on a budget.

Two hotels here were recommended to us most: Rye115 Hotel (around €100 a night) and Hotel Østerport. At around €70 a night, Hotel Østerport is extremely affordable for its location. Grab it if you can find a room! We couldn’t.

3. Nørrebro

This is Copenhagen’s hipster district! 🙂 As you can imagine, it’s Umut’s favourite area by far. It’s also a fun, affordable place to stay in Copenhagen.

If you don’t mind a shared bathroom, our first pick is a double room at Sleep in Heaven. It’s one of the most fun hostels in Copenhagen.

We can also recommend the budget-friendly A&O Hotel chain, at around €90 a night.

Happy to spend a little more? Book M18, at around €120 a night.

4. Indre By (City Centre)

If you want to stay right in the centre, look for hotels here. The city’s key buildings, museums and that famous canal are all in this area.

You can split the centre into two parts: Nyhavn (the canal area) and Strøget (the shopping street).

Prices here can be a bit high, unfortunately. Still, it’s the most central place to stay in Copenhagen. Here are the most affordable options recommended to us:

For a fun atmosphere, and if a shared bathroom is fine, we recommend the double rooms at Danhostel Copenhagen City. So many people recommended it to us! If it’s full, check out Copenhagen Downtown Hostel. Rooms at both average around €60–80 a night, which is really affordable for this area.

Two highly recommended hotels at around €100 a night: Wake Up Copenhagen and Hotel Bethel.

Which Area Is Best for You?

First time in Copenhagen? Stay in Indre By or Vesterbro to be close to everything. On a tighter budget, Østerbro has better prices and a local feel. And if you love a hip, creative vibe, Nørrebro is the place to stay in Copenhagen.

Thinking of renting a car? Here’s our DiscoverCars link. We’ve rented through them for years. You can compare prices from different companies on one screen and check ratings and reviews. Our experience has always been good, and we usually get a better price.

Finally, for tours and activities, here’s our GetYourGuide link. Whenever we plan activities in a new city, we use GetYourGuide. Seeing the ratings and reviews helps a lot, and we’ve always been happy with what we chose. Prices are good value, too.

We loved Copenhagen, and we’re sure you will too! We hope this guide helps you decide where to stay in Copenhagen 🙂

We’re also on Instagram and YouTube, and we’d love to see you there!

With love!
